The Knights of the Order of St John of Jerusalem fortified the island of Rhodes in the 14th century. Gazing at Rhodes own from our ship’s deck, we can admire the wonderful range of walls, towers and turreted gateways, and the imposing Palace of the Grand Masters, which dominates the view. Our tour begins with a sightseeing drive around the modern town. We will enjoy a beautiful view of the town and its harbour from the top of Mount Smith, where the ancient Acropolis once stood. Then we drive back an enter the old town at the Gate d’Ambroise to visit the Palace of the Grand masters – the most imposing buildings of the medieval town of Rhodes. It was constructed during the 14th century, but was almost completely demolished in 1856 by an explosion of gunpowder that was stored in the basement of a nearby church. The restoration of the Palace was finished in 1939, during the Italian occupation; every effort was made to follow the original design. Following our guide down the Street of the Knights we arrive at the former hospital of the Knights, today housing the Archaeological Museum. Here we shall visit some of the most important rooms. Following our visit, our guide will direct us towards Socrates Street, which attracts visitors with its many cafes and shops. Here the guided tour will end and we shall have some free time to explore part of the old town, before we return to our awaiting ship.
This tour features a large amount of walking, therefore we do not recommend it for passengers with limited mobility. Please note that it is possible for passengers to walk to the old town independently, however an English-speaking guide will conduct this organised excursion, and the tour will utilise an air-conditioned coach, and includes entrance fees to the museum and palace. Flash photography is prohibited in the Archaeological Museum.
