From the pier, we drive to the centre of Palermo, situated in the middle of the gulf that bears its name. The city’s history traces its roots to the beginning of the Mediterranean civilisation. It has been ruled by the Phoenicians, Greeks, Cartagineses, Roman, Arabs and the Normans – all of whom left their mark in Palermo’s monuments. We will visit the 12th century Cathedral before heading towards Monreale along the main streets and squares of Palermo. Monreale is a small village of Arab origin, surrounded by the Conca d’Ore. We will visit the Dome and the Benedictine Cloister dating back to the 12th century. From here, there is a wonderful panorama to be seen, over the Gulf of Palermo. A pleasant drive takes us back to the ship.
This tour involves a total walking time of approximately 2½ hours. There are some steps to negotiate at the Main Square in Monreale. Shoulders should be covered for our visit to the cathedral and Cloister. The order of the sites visited may be changed depending upon the opening times of the cathedral, Dome and Cloister.
