Leaving the port of Chios behind we will travel to the medieval Mesta, a beautiful preserved 14th century fortified village. Here we will visit both the old and new churches of Taxiarches before having some free time to wonder through the village’s warren of narrow streets. Following our stop at Mesta we will take a short coach ride to see the island’s famed mastic trees where we will make a photo stop before continuing onto Pyrgi. The entire village of Pyrgi - 25 Kilometres south of the town of Chios - is one of the areas which still stands as it was built. The narrow roads, the innumerable churches, and amongst them the 13th century Byzantine church of St. Apostles in combination with the unique black and white geometrical decor of the outer walls of the houses. Here we will take a walk around the town and be given some free time to explore on our own before making our journey back to our ship.
Please note that in the villages that we shall visit cobblestone streets and various steps can be expected. Visitors to the churches should be conservatively dressed; shorts are not allowed.
