This tour will give us the opportunity to explore the architectural legacy of one of Barcelona’s most famous sons: Antonio Gaudí. His buildings form a most startling statement of Modernism, a Spanish and mainly Catalan offshoot of the Art Nouveau movement. From the pier we will drive to Diagonal Avenue, and enter the upper Eixample area where the Sagrada Familia is found. Designed by Gaudí in 1881 but never completed, this church stands witness to Gaudí’s creative, although controversial, genius. Construction began again in 1940 but faltered due to confusion over Gaudí’s plans. We will be taken on a guided tour through the inside of the church. We will rejoin our coach for a short drive to Park Güell. Designed by Gaudí in the early part of the last century, it was intended as a hillside garden suburb of Barcelona, fashioned after the English model of a ‘Garden City’. Our tour continues to Passeig de Gracia, the widest avenue in the city with plenty of Modernist houses designed by Gaudí and other important architects of the period. We will stop for an outside visit of one of the masterpieces of Gaudí’s architecture: the Casa Mila, otherwise knows as ‘La Pedrera House’.
This tour involves approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes of walking over uneven and sometimes inclining ground; therefore we do not recommend this tour for passengers with limited mobility or wheelchair users. There are approximately 50 steps and some cobblestones at Park Güell, and a further 15 steps at the Sagrada Familia to negotiate.
