Founded by the Romans, Florence later came under the rule of the Medici family, who became the Grand Dukes of Tuscany. At this time, the city was at the height of its glory in art and culture as well as politics and economic power. Florence has retained an extraordinary wealth of arts and treasures bearing witness to its success. We board our coach for an approximate 2 hour drive from Livorno to Florence. Upon arrival we meet our local guide and begin the tour with a drive up to Piazzale Michelangelo, an esplanade that overlooks the city. Once back in the centre of Florence, we disembark our coach for a guided walking tour. The historic pedestrianised centre of the city is home to many of its famous sights. During our visit we see the magnificent Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore with its impressive dome, baptistery and Giotto bell tower. Our walk will tae us down various streets to the Piazza della Signoria, to see the Palazzo Vecchio (old gothic palace) with its ornate courtyard and artistic treasures. We will also have the opportunity to admire the Loggia dei Lanzi, an open-air museum displaying masterpieces of sculptors, as well as the Ponte Vecchio – the only bridge in Florence to survive the World War II bombings. We will also visit the Santa Croce Square. Free time will be given for lunch (lunch is at your own expense) before we meet up with our local guide and join our coach again. Before leaving Florence, we will pass by the Piazzale Michelangelo. Upon arrival in Pisa, we disembark our coach and walk to Miracle Square, where we will be given free time to explore independently. During our free time we could stop or even visit the Campo Santo, a fascinating cemetery containing tombs, sculptures, frescos and domed chapels. Following our free time we shall meet up with our guide for the return journey to our awaiting ship. Please note this tour does not include lunch, this will be at your own expense.
Please be advised that the historical city centre is a pedestrianised area, therefore this is a walking tour, which involves a significant amount of physical effort. Comfortable shoes are essential. This tour is not suitable for passengers with limited mobility. On our guided tour we will only make outside visits; if an inside visit of Santa Croce is required, there is an entrance fee of Euro 3.00 per person – price correct at time of print.
