We leave for the pier for a panoramic tour of Ferrol, before departing to the village of Betanzos, nar La Coruña. En route we will pass by the Torre del Hercules, a Roman lighthouse dating back to the second century. This is the only Roman lighthouse in the world that is still used for its original purpose of guiding ships into the harbour of La Coruña. We will also pass by the San Anton Castle, located along the seafront promenade. This castle nowadays houses the archaeological Museum of the city. The Roman town of Brigantium Flavium emerged from old Castros and gave birth to the present village of Betanzos. King Alfonso IX granted it the same law-code as La Coruña and so a new era of prosperity began. However, the mighty Andrade family and other noblemen were the protagonists of its medieval history and this explains the place name of Betanzos de los Caballeros (‘of the knights’). Nobility and bourgeoisie attracted Franciscans, whose church is a masterpiece of Galician art. Before we return to our ship in Ferrol, we will enjoy some appetisers in a local hotel. Please note that this tour involves a moderate amount of walking (approximately 2 hours). In Betanzos this will be uphill and over cobblestone streets. This tour is not recommended for passengers with limited mobility.
