DESCRIPTION CORRECT FOR 2011 CANARIES & MEDITERRANEAN CRUISES
The presence of the Muslims who occupied Ciutadella is evident by the maze of narrow streets, which begin from Plaça dés Born (Born Square), within the walls of the Moresque city. An obelisk, which was built in the middle of last century, commemorates the town’s residents, who were killed or forced into slavery during a Turkish attack in 1558. We shall also see the outside of the Town Hall, a palace emblem of power, the Born Theatre (Teatre des Born) and the noble palaces of Salort, Vivó and Torre Saura, neo-classic properties of the nobility, which is still in power today.
From Plaça dés Born, the streets stretch out across the city centre, and take us to the impressive 14th century Cathedral, built on an ancient Arab mosque (parts of which were incorporated into the Cathedral’s design). Here we shall see architectural surprises, such as the Roser Church (Iglésia del Roser) or Saura Palace (Palau Saura), which have both been transformed into exhibition halls.
After admiring the beauty here during our walking tour, we can enjoy some free time to explore independently, relax among the terraces within the many squares, or browse the local shops. Some of us may wish to walk to the picturesque port of Ciutadella – one of the smallest in the Mediterranean. The port is lined with traditional fishing boats and yachts, and the promenade features seafood restaurants.
Following our free time, we re-board our tour coach for the return journey back to Mahón and our awaiting ship.
TOUR NOTES: Our guided walking tour of Ciutadella takes approximately 45 minutes, and will be over flat, even ground. There will be some steps to negotiate around the town. There will be approximately one and a half hours of free time, where walking is at the discretion of the individual.
