The idea of building a canal to link the Atlantic and the Mediterranean dates back to the Romans. François I, Henri IV and Richelieu all commissioned studies to this end, none of which bore fruit.

The idea of building a canal to link the Atlantic and the Mediterranean dates back to the Romans. François I, Henri IV and Richelieu all commissioned studies to this end, none of which bore fruit. Finally Pierre Paul Riquet, Baron of Bonrepos and Languedoc tax-farmer, successfully carried out the project at his own expense. The construction needed the efforts of an average of 12,000 men, who excavated thousands of tonnes of earth – in order to link Toulouse and Séte – between 1667 and 1680. Originally the Canal du Midi was used to transport goods, but today it is used exclusively for tourism. We depart Séte for our drive to our departure point of Colombiers. Here we will board a boat to travel along the canal, cruising from Colombiers to Fonserannes. During our approximate 90 minute navigation, we will discover the beauty of a canal flanked by more than 10,000 trees. We will have the opportunity to appreciate the calm and tranquillity of the picturesque villages on the banks of the canal, which have managed to preserve their charm. The Canal du Midi was recognised by Unesco in 1996 as one of the most beautiful examples of world heritage. Participants of this tour must be able to board the boat by themselves and does not offer any disabled access.
