    TOUR F - HERCULANEUM

    Excursions

    • £40 - £50
    • Approximately 3.5 hours
    • Strenuous

Herculaneum was once the site where rich Romans had their private, most beautiful villas and luxurious properties, most of which were overlooking the sea. Like Pompeii, Herculaneum was lost from the world following the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in the year 79 AD, and hidden for almost 1,800 years.

While and roofs collapsed under the weight of falling debris, and hot ash consumed the wooden structures at Pompeii, Herculaneum was submerged by a boiling mudslide by Mount Vesuvius. The mud filled buildings from the bottom up, and then solidified, sealing and protecting them. As a result, marble floors, mosaics, carbonised wood, paintings and even a wooden Roman bed are now all exposed for visitors to see. Until 1980 only a few bodies had been found, leading to the assumption that most of the inhabitants had managed to escape. However in 1982, during excavations on boathouses close to the beach, archaeologists found hundreds of skeletons huddled close together. This provided a rare opportunity to study Roman remains, as they often cremated their dead.

Excavations began in the 1800s, but ceased following the discovery of nearby Pompeii, which was easier to excavate due to it only being covered by approximately four metres of debris. They began again in the 20th century, and there are still many private and public buildings to be discovered. During our visit to Herculaneum, we will view some of these ancient properties and villas, along with Roman baths and a gymnasium.

Following our visit, we can have some free time to browse souvenirs prior to the return journey to the quayside and our awaiting ship.

TOUR NOTES: This tour involves approximately one hour and 45 minutes of walking over uneven terrain, and there are some steps to negotiate at the site. Unfortunately it is not suitable for passengers with limited mobility or wheelchair users. There is a walk of approximately 15 minutes from the coach park to the archaeological site, and vice versa.
