Xanthi Old Town
Excursions
- 50-60
- 4 hours 15 minutes
Leaving the pier, we drive to Xanthi, a well-preserved old town famous for its aromatic tobacco. Xanthi began life as a small village, but tobacco commerce in Europe lead to a period of prosperity for the town. Today its old churches, squares, inns and tobacco warehouses all indicate the civilisation of the previous century.
Upon arrival in Xanthi, we shall view the old town, the outside of the City Hall, Metropolis Church and Tobacco Factories. Next we visit the Folklore Museum, located in a mansion, which was built towards the end of the 1800s. Featuring all of the original furnishings, the residence was built by the Kouyioumtzoglou family, who benefited from the tobacco trade during Xanthi’s peak. During our tour here, we shall see the various relics on show, and also texts of historical value.
Following our visit, we can enjoy some free time to explore the area at leisure, browse the shops or enjoy refreshments (at the passenger’s own cost), before re-boarding our tour coach for the return drive to Kavala.
TOUR NOTES: This tour involves a moderate amount of walking, some of which will be over cobbled and uphill terrain. There will be around 45 minutes of free time, where walking is at the discretion of the individual. Please note that the journey from Kavala to Xanthi takes approximately one hour – a comfort stop will NOT be made en route.
