Pella

- 3.5 hours

Founded by King Archelaos, Pella was located on the shores of Lake Loudias, and soon developed into an important port. The author Euripides came to Pella to see his plays produced and performed, while Aristotle was appointed here to educate the young Alexander. For 250 years, Pella was the cultural centre of the Greek world and was the seat of both Alexander the Great and his father Philip II, during which time the city was the location of palaces and luxurious private homes.
The city was destroyed by what is believed to have been an earthquake in around the 1st century BC and was eventually rebuilt over its ruins. Thanks to archaeological excavations, which began in 1957, public buildings and luxurious private homes with intricate marble-floor mosaics were uncovered. Also unearthed were a plethora of delicate clay figurines, vases and coins. We can view these artefacts and more during our visit to both the archaeological site and also the museum. Following our visit, we can enjoy approximately 30 minutes of free time to browse independently, prior to the return journey to Thessaloniki and our awaiting ship.
TOUR NOTES: This tour involves approximately two hours of compulsory standing and walking during our visit to Pella, some of which will be over uneven ground. There are approximately ten steps to negotiate at the entrance of the museum. Unfortunately it is not suitable for wheelchair users. Walking during the period of free time is at the discretion of the individual. Depending on the berth of our ship, there may be a walk of up to 100 metres from the ship to the tour coaches, and vice versa. Passengers are advised to wear flat, comfortable walking shoes. Please note that flash photography is not permitted inside the museum. This tour may operate in a different order to that described.
