    • 4.5 hours

Departing the quayside, we travel approximately 50 kilometres along the highway to reach Taormina. Upon arrival, we leave our coach and begin our walking tour, during which we will be able to admire the outside of the famous Gothic Corvaja Palaces, dating back to the 15th century.

Next we visit the impressive Greek Theatre, built in the 5th century and later expanded by the Romans, who enlarged the stage and added a partial roof (which has since been destroyed). The ancient theatre is one of the most notable ruins in Sicily, due to its astonishing preservation. It is the second largest of its kind in Sicily and is today still used for open-air performances in summer, owing to its spaciousness and acoustics. The view of Mount Etna, Europe’s largest volcano, and the sea beyond is breathtaking.

Prior to returning to our ship, we will have some free time to stroll along the broad pedestrian area, where we have the opportunity to browse the local handicrafts, or walk along to Piazza del Duomo to look at the old Dominican Monastery, now a deluxe hotel.

TOUR NOTES: Please note that Taormina is a pedestrianised area, therefore this tour involves approximately one and a half to two hours of walking, some of which will be over uneven ground, and there are some steps to negotiate. There is an approximate 15-minute walk from the coach park to Taormina, and vice versa. The amount of walking during the period of free time (approximately one hour) is at the discretion of the individual. Passengers are advised to wear comfortable walking shoes.
