Tindari
Excursions
- 30-40
- 4.5 hours
Departing the quayside, we enjoy a scenic drive along the northern coast of Sicily before arriving at the archaeological site of Tindari. The site lies on a high cape overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea. ‘Tyndaris’, as it was then known, was founded in 396 BC by Dionysius I, ruler of Syracuse, in an area that was inhabited since prehistoric times. An ally of the Romans during the Punic Wars, Tyndaris prospered in the Imperial Age.
Upon entering the revered archaeological site, we continue to the Greek Theatre, which has splendid views of the sea. The theatre was adapted to stage gladiator fights. We shall also see Tindari’s fascinating Roman-era thermal bath, which is adorned with colourful mosaics.
Next we visit the Christian Sanctuary of the Black Madonna, which rises up majestically on the cape and attracts faithful worshippers from all over the island. The square in front of the sanctuary offers an unforgettable view over the aqua-blue sea that stretches out before us.
After a short period of free time, we re-board our tour coach for the return journey to Messina and our awaiting ship.
TOUR NOTES: This tour involves approximately one and a half hours of walking, some of which will be over hilly and uneven terrain, and there are some steps to negotiate. Unfortunately it is not suitable for passengers with limited mobility or wheelchair users. There is approximately 30 minutes of free time following our visit to the Sanctuary, where walking is at the discretion of the individual. Please note there is a walk of approximately 15 minutes from the coach park to the archaeological area. Passengers are advised to wear comfortable walking shoes. Religious practice requires shoulder and knees to be covered when entering the Sanctuary.
