Departing the quayside, we drive to Ano Lehonia train station, located in the Pelion area. Here we board the small steam train ‘Moutzouris’ (‘smoky train’), which will take us on a picturesque journey through several villages up the hills to Milies. The train was first introduced in 1895, and was in continuous operation until 1971, assisting with the development of Volos. Part of the line’s infrastructure included the first reinforced concrete bridge to be constructed in Greece. The train was re-commissioned in 1996.
During our journey, which will be at a speed of approximately 25 kilometres per hour, we shall climb through forests of olive groves and have the chance to enjoy the fantastic view out to sea, as well as the five-arched bridge and steady iron bridge, both built by Italian engineer Evaristo de Kirico.
Upon arrival in Milies, we visit the local church, Agios Taxiarchos, which was built in 1741. It was here in 1821 that the revolution against the Turks started. Following our visit, we can enjoy some free time to explore the area independently, prior to boarding our tour coach for the return journey to Volos and the quayside.
TOUR NOTES: This tour involves approximately one kilometre (half a mile) of compulsory walking. For those wishing to walk up to the village square in Milies, there is an additional one kilometre of walking, which is over cobbled ground and slight inclines. There are around two to three steps to negotiate to board the train. Unfortunately it is not suitable for wheelchair users. Passengers are advised to wear flat, comfortable shoes. For reference, our train journey lasts approximately one hour and 15 minutes. The return drive from Milies to Volos takes around one hour – a comfort stop will NOT be made. The order of sites visited may vary. Please note that depending on the berth of our ship, there may be a walk of approximately 150 metres from the ship to our tour coach. For reference, there are limited toilet facilities at the train stations – the only other toilet facilities will be available in the coffee shop – passengers will be expected to purchase a drink before using the amenities.
