On our tour today, we have the opportunity to travel through the ages to get a glimpse of the tradition and culture of Volos and Pelion.
We begin with a drive to the Archaeological Museum, which contains artefacts from the surrounding area dating from the Bronze Age to the Hellenistic period. On display are an astonishing series of around 300 marble funerary steles, which date back from the Hellenistic period, and some tombs that have been reconstructed to illustrate the funerary rites and customs practised in prehistory and Antiquity. There are also collections of Neolithic objects from 4000 BC and Mycenaean vases excavated at Iolkos.
Next we continue to Mount Pelion and drive up to Makrinitsa – an interesting village at an altitude of 700 metres above sea level. Known as the ‘Balcony of Pelion’, Makrinitsa is located right above the city of Volos, and has excellent panoramic views from its main square. Upon arrival here, we walk through the entrance to the village, along narrow streets and between splendid houses built in the traditional style, with jutting upper storeys and slate roofs. The main square is especially attractive with its fountain, plane trees and tiny church dating from the 13th century.
Upon arrival, we shall walk to the main square, where we can then enjoy some free time to explore the area independently or enjoy refreshments (at the passengers’ own cost), overlooking Volos and the Gulf. From here we walk back to our coach to begin the return journey to the quayside.
TOUR NOTES: This tour involves a moderate amount of walking. There is approximately one hour of walking and standing at the Archaeological Museum, plus nine steps to negotiate, and one hour of compulsory walking at Makrinitsa, over cobbled and uphill ground. Unfortunately it is not suitable for wheelchair users. There will be around 45 minutes of free time, where walking is at the discretion of the individual. Passengers are advised to wear flat, comfortable walking shoes. Please note that flash photography is prohibited in the museum. Depending on the berth of our ship, there may be a walk of approximately 150 metres from the ship to our tour coaches. Places of interest may be visited in a different order to that described.
