    Rhodes City Tour

    Excursions

    • 51-60
    • 3.5 hours

The Knights of the Order of St John of Jerusalem fortified the island of Rhodes in the 14th century. Gazing at Rhodes from our ship’s dock, we can admire the wonderful range of walls, towers and turreted gateways, and the imposing Palace of the Grand Masters, which dominates the view.

Departing the quayside on foot, we enter the Old Town and walk to the former hospital of the Knights, which today houses the Archaeological Museum. Then we proceed to the Palace of the Grand Masters – the most imposing building in the medieval town. Constructed during the 14th century, it was almost completely destroyed in 1856 following an explosion of gunpowder that was stored in the basement of a nearby church. The restoration of the palace was completed in 1939 during the Italian occupation – every effort was made to follow the original design.

Next we board our tour coach to begin a sightseeing drive around the modern town. We shall enjoy a beautiful view of the town and its harbour, which was once protected by the 100-foot high Colossus of Rhodes (one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World) from the top of Mount Smith, where the ancient Acropolis once stood.

Following our drive, our guide will direct us towards Socrates Street, which attracts visitors with its many cafés and shops. Here our guided tour will end, and we can enjoy some free time to explore the area independently, before returning to our awaiting ship.

TOUR NOTES: This tour involves a considerable amount of walking and standing, some of which will be over uphill terrain, therefore it is not recommended for passengers with limited mobility or wheelchair users. There are approximately 45 steps to negotiate at the Palace of the Grand Masters, ten steps during the walk to the Archaeological Museum and 15 steps during the walk to Socrates Street. The amount of walking during the period of free time is at the discretion of the individual. Please note that although it is possible visit these sights independently, this excursion is for those who appreciate an organised tour with a knowledgeable guide, and includes entrance fees to the museum and the palace. Flash photography is prohibited in the Archaeological Museum. At the end of the tour, passengers will make their own way back to the ship.
