    TOUR E - TRADITIONAL MALAGA & FLAMENCO

    Excursions

    • £45 - £55
    • 4 hours
    • Limited capacity
    • Moderate

Departing the quayside, we begin our tour with a panoramic drive of Malaga en route to the flamenco venue. During our drive, we can view the City Hall, La Aduana (the old Custom House), Plaza de Toros (the bullring), the Roman theatre, Merced Square, Alcazba and Gibalfaro Castle.

Flamenco personifies the fiery passion, artistry and culture of Andalusia. Full of expression and emotion, it is a complex art form that requires years of development by performers. In Malaga, flamenco comes in different forms, and there are folk dances that belong to specific towns in the region – Rondeñas, Verdiales, Jaberas and Malagueñas. Upon arrival at the typical Andalusian venue, we can sit back and watch the flamenco performance as we enjoy tapas and a glass of wine.

Next we re-board our tour coach and travel to the Malaga Wine Museum. On 12th January 1502, Catholic monarchs banned other wines from entering the city, in an attempt to protect the production of local varieties – it was the beginning of a long battle to protect and promote Malaga wine. Located in the historic city centre, the Museum allows us to familiarise ourselves with the history and culture of wine in the province.

We then walk to the headquarters of the Cofradía de Los Viñeros (Brotherhood of Vineyard Growers). This religious brotherhood, made up of vintners, was created during the 16th century and has always been closely related to the wine cellars of Malaga. At Easter, the streets of the city host one of the most spectacular events in southern Spain, Semana Santa (Holy Week). During this time, Malaga becomes a giant stage, where the Cofradías parade religious statues and floats through the street, including those depicting the Passion of Christ. During our visit here, we can view the Holy Week floats and other items of religious importance.

Following our visit, we follow our guide along the main shopping streets of Malaga, before we are given some free time to explore at leisure, prior to returning to the quayside and our awaiting ship.

TOUR NOTES: This tour involves approximately 45 minutes of walking and standing at the Wine Museum, 30 minutes at Cofradía de Los Viñeros, and 15 minutes along Malaga’s shopping streets, and there are some steps to negotiate. Unfortunately it is not suitable for passengers with limited mobility or wheelchair users. There will be around 30 minutes of free time, where walking is at the discretion of the individual.
