We begin our tour with a drive to Elche, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000 for its Palmeral and Misteri Festival. The city is worthy of special interest on account of its spectacular surroundings, wealth of monuments and its architecture, which is steeped in history. Upon arrival, we will see the 17th century Church of Santa Maria, with its blue-tiled dome. We shall also visit Municipal Park, which covers an area of six hectares. Here we can see the palm trees, for which Elche is famous, in all of their glory.
Next, we make our way to the Huerto Del Cura, which is home to the Imperial palm tree, and is the greatest treasure of this garden. Considered to be the cultural crucible of this city, this area of 13,000 square metres is home to 700 palm trees and 500 other species of plants and flowers. Away from the hustle and bustle of the city we will find tranquillity and beauty, and a mixture of Mediterranean and tropical plants – both rare species and typical trees of this area, including cactus, lemon, orange, carob, pomegranate and jujube trees. We can enjoy some free time here, to enjoy a walk through the gardens, before re-boarding our tour coach for the return journey to the quayside and our awaiting ship.
TOUR NOTES: This tour involves a moderate amount of compulsory walking (approximately one kilometre in the town of Elche, and 500 metres at the Botanical Gardens), some of which will be over uneven ground, and there are a few steps to negotiate. There will be approximately 30 minutes of free time at the Botanical Gardens, where walking is at the discretion of the individual. What flora may be seen is obviously subject to seasonal change. For reference, the journey from the quayside to Elche takes approximately one hour and 15 minutes; a comfort stop will NOT be made en route, however toilet facilities are available in bars and restaurants in Elche and also at the gardens.
