Founded by the Arabs approximately 1,200 years ago, Murcia, the capital of the region, is located in a fertile valley, which was converted into the Garden of the Segura. Here we can find an interesting fusion of cultures and artistic styles, particularly in its splendid Cathedral.
Departing the quayside, we drive to the centre of Murcia, where we begin our tour with a visit to the Cathedral – the most important and emblematic building in Murcia. Construction originally began in 1394 on the site where an Arab mosque once stood. It demonstrates architectural styles from more than five centuries, including a bell tower, which is more than 95 metres high – the tallest in Spain – and took over 200 years to build. The interior of the Cathedral, which is in a Gothic style, is just as rich as the Baroque façade. We shall also visit the Monastery of Santa Clara.
Next we can enjoy some free time in the centre of Murcia, before continuing to the Sanctuary of La Fuensanta, situated in the mountains. Built between the 17th and 18th centuries, the Sanctuary consists of a Murcian Baroque temple, which has three naves, and the façade has two towers.
From here, we re-board our tour coach for the return journey to Cartagena and our awaiting ship.
TOUR NOTES: This tour involves approximately one and a half to one and three quarter hours of walking, some of which will be over cobbled ground, and some steps will be encountered at each of the stops. Unfortunately it is not considered suitable for wheelchair users. There will be approximately 45 minutes of free time, where walking is at the discretion of the individual. Please note that should our call fall on a Monday, the Santa Clara Monastery will be closed, therefore guests will be given additional free time instead. Religious practice requires shoulders and knees to be covered when entering the Cathedral (i.e. no shorts or vests).
