Departing La Rochelle we head to the historic city of Saintes, which was converted to Christianity in the very early days and became a town with a strong religious vocation. Our guide will take us on a walking tour of the old town, around the majestic Cathedral of Saint-Pierre. This impressive building still bears the marks of a strange gothic building project, interrupted by religious wars in the 15th century. Many traces of the different building stages remain, including a Romanesque cupola, a canonical room, and 13th and 14th century cloisters. Following our guided visit, we will be given some free time to enjoy the city atmosphere. We continue our drive to the Château La Roche Courbon, where we will have a guided tour. An architectural jewel set between two cliffs, the exceptional site of La Roche Courbon is located beside a stream in the middle of a forest more than a thousand years old. Built as an austere fortress in the 15th century, it was transformed by Jean-Louis de Courbon into an elegant dwelling during the 17th century. A double staircase was also built, leading down to the formal French gardens. A harmonious series of balustrade terraces, providing a magnificent perspective, descend gracefully to a staircase and ornamental lake. Inside the château is a room containing paintings on wood dating from 1662; a Louis XIII room with painted beams; a kitchen typical of the local style; and a guard room with a vaulted roof, housing beautiful furniture. After our inside tour, we will have some free time, which will allow us to discover the gardens. The terrace offers a stunning view of the château. A lot of walking, steps and uneven ground will be encountered at the château.
