Cherbourg, France

-
Enjoy this town of heritage, rich in historic monuments.
Ferry passengers who travel through Cherbourg- Octeville – its full name since 2000 – without
stopping miss out on a lovely city. There are some fine religious buildings, notably the massive Basilica of the Holy Trinity, parts of which are said to date back to around AD435. Among the town’s excellent museum is the one T. Henry founded in 1831 housing a collection of over 300 works of art, and the Liberation Museum in the Forte de Roul, telling the story of the occupation of the town during the Second World War. Also of interest is the Cité de la Mer, a vast aquarium and museum dedicated to all things marine, which is home to the submarine Redoutable. It’s the largest such vessel in the world open to the public.
