Departing from the pier our coach will take us on a short journey of approximately 30 minutes to the village of San Felipe. Located by the sea, the village offers incredible views of the Ferrol Ria (coastline). The Castle of San Felipe was built between 1731 and 1744 over the remains of a previous fortress. It was a military construction of defensive vocation that was constructed by order of King Felipe II. Originally built in the shape of an arrowhead, it focussed a line of fire towards the sea. On the other side of the estuary is the Castle of La Palma. A chain was often stretched of visits controlled by a security watchman; the building is totally abandoned and now damaged by vegetation and humidity. We shall have a guided tour of the San Felipe Castle remains before departing to the Naval Museum, which is located in the old San Campio Prison, inside the military arsenal. Entry is through the armada social and cultural centre. Dependant upon the Madrid Naval Museum, the exhibition consists of the remains of wrecked ships, maps and models of sunken ships, weapons, cartography, sails and utensils used by sailors onboard ships. We will be able to view many of these items as well as discover the panel, which has the names of ships, built in Ferrol shipyards from 1751 to 1984 etched on it. Please note that this tour involves approximately 2 hours of walking, mostly over uneven cobblestone grounds. There are approximately 40 steps to negotiate at the Castle and a further 10 steps at the Navel Museum. We do not recommend this tour to passengers with limited mobility and wheelchair users.
