Leaving Portimão we head to Lagos, where we will enjoy a glimpse into this fascinating city. Lagos has played an important part in the story of discovery. It was from this very harbour that Vasco da Gama sailed in 1499 on his epic voyage. Lagos was capital of the Algarve from 1578 until 1756, and several ancient buildings remain to testify to its historic glory. immediately upon arrival we will see the city’s central highlights, including the main square fronting the Town Hall and the new Marina; here we are given some free time to explore. Our tour continues to the rocky coastline of the Ponta da Piedade where we can admire some of the most photogenic rock formations of the entire Algarve. From Ponta da Piedade our drive will wind its way along the coast to exclusive Carvoeiro, perched dramatically on clifftops expanded over the years – although it manages to retain its charm and character. On the small sandy cove there is a handful of traditional fishing boats, which add a splash of colour and life to the beach. We have some free time here to wander through the streets and enjoy the relaxed pace of life. Please note that this tour does involve some walking mostly over uneven ground and a few steps may be encountered but is suitable for passengers with limited mobility. Flat, comfortable shoes are recommended.
