Granada was at its peak during the 11th century, when it became for a while the capital of a small kingdom. Our journey to this beautiful city which is rich in history, lying at the foot of the Sierra Nevada Mountains and on the edge of fertile ‘Vega de Granada’ – the greenest and best stretch of farmland in Andalucia – will take approximately two hours. We will pass by impressive mountain scenery, and make a short comfort stop en route.Upon arrival in Granada we will proceed to the world-famous fortified Alhambra Palace, sometimes also referred to as the ‘Red Palace’ because of its construction from red stone. The Arabian Palace, the heart of Alhambra, is composed of three enclosures: one which was dedicated to matters of administration and justice; the Arrayanes Courtyard with the throne room used for official purposes; and the Courtyard of the Lions which contained the king’s private residence. All three areas are magnificent examples of Arabian Architecture. The Generalife was the summer palace of the Arab kings. Cypress trees border the pleasant walkways here, which lead to the ‘Yen-Nat-Al-Arif’, or ‘Architect’s Garden’. This contains two pavilions separated by the enchanting Acequia Patio. All the buildings are surrounded by magnificent flora and innumerable fountains and terraces affording lovely views of the Alhambra and Albaicín (the city’s oldest quarter).Following our visit to Alhambra, we will enjoy lunch in a hotel restaurant, a short drive away. Then, refreshed, we will retrace our steps back to the ship in Malaga. Please note that there is more than 2 hours of walking involved in this tour, which includes uneven ground, slopes and many steps, therefore it is unsuitable for passengers with limited mobility or wheelchair passengers. The Alhambra is perhaps the most visited site in Spain, and because of this entrance tickets are often scarce. We would kindly request that passengers pre-book this excursion in advance, allowing time for a sufficient number of passes to be obtained.
