Departing the quayside, we travel along the highway until we reach Jerez de la Frontera, the fifth largest city in Andalucia, famous for sherry, horses and flamenco. Upon arrival, we commence our sightseeing tour through the old Asta Regia, a border zone during the Emirate of Córdoba, which was re-conquered by King Alfonso X. It is one of the most illustrious cities of southern Spain. With its monuments and wine making, Jerez has a marked Andalusian flavour.
Following our panoramic tour, we shall visit one of the famous bodegas (wine cellars), where we can taste the world-renowned sherry wine.
Next, we proceed to the Alcazar de Jerez. Built in the 12th century, it is one of the few examples of Almohad architecture that exists in the peninsula. During the long period of the conquest and in Christian times, it was used both as a fortress and palace. Outside we will see the Octagonal Tower, the Almohad Tower and the Ponce de Leon Tower. Inside the Alcazar, we will see the Gate of the City, the Mosque, the Alhminar, the Patio de las Abluciones and the Room of Prayers. Our visit will also include the Baths and the Gate to the Country.
From here, we return to the quayside and our awaiting ship.
TOUR NOTES: This tour involves approximately one hour of walking and standing in the wine cellar, and around 45 minutes at the Alcazar, some of which will be over cobbled ground. There are a few steps to negotiate at the wine cellar, and ten steps at the Baths at the Alcazar. Unfortunately it is not suitable for wheelchair users. This tour may operate in a different order to that described.
