As we view the highlights of Cadiz, we will head towards the town of Jerez de la Frontera. A town that boasts a strong Moorish influence in its architecture and is the sherry capital of the world. In a warm, dry microclimate away from the marine environment of Cadiz, the uniquely sweet sherry grapes grow well. At the Gonzalez Byass wine cellar we will make our first stop to taste some of the region’s famous sherry wines and snacks. Founded back in 1835 by a partnership between Spanish Manuel Maria González Angel and his British agent Robert Blake Byass, González Byass is one of the classic bodegas of the sherry triangle. The winery itself is still family owned, and boasts vineyards in the best parcels of Jerez- Macharnudo, Carrascal and Burujena. The Sherries produced at González Byass include Finos, Manzanillas, Olorosos, Amontillados, and Pedro Ximénez styles. Before our tasting we will board a train that will take us on a tour around the cellar. We will see what the owners call “the cathedral of wine” with thousands of barrels maturing in the cellars, it is an impressive view! On our return back to our ship we will make a short stop in Jerez where we will complete a very short walking tour of the city before board our coach for the short trip back to the port. Please be aware that this tour involves approximately 1½ hours of walking in total and approximately 20 steps will be encountered at the wine cellar.
