As we depart from the pier we will enjoy a panoramic drive through Vigo, a city attacked by Sir Francis Drake in 1585 and 1589. The city’s architecture gives a modern impression, though a few old buildings still remain. These include the medieval chapel of the Casa de Caridad – the neo-Classical Collegiate Church of Santo Cristo de la Victoria – that was built to commemorate the defeat of the French in the Peninsular War. En route to Bayona – a picturesque village at the mouth of the Muino River – we’ll see some of the beautiful Galician coastline. In Bayona a visit is made to the Fortaleza Monte Boi, today used as the Parador (hotel) de Turismo Conde de Gondomar. We will then begin a walking tour of the village, where we will have the opportunity to admire the popular architecture, visit the former Collegiate Church of Santa Marta, built in a Roman-Gothic style, and the Church of Santa Liberata. Finally we will visit the port, with a reproduction of La Pinta, the famous ship of Columbus. After some free time we will return to our ship. There is approximately 1 hour of walking involved in this tour, some of which will be over cobblestones and varying gradients to Fortaleza.
