El Jadida is an old Portuguese city, situated on the Atlantic coast. It is best known for its massive walled citadel, with its cistern, bastions and piers. Built by the Portuguese in 1502, many houses are still visible beyond the city walls.
We depart from the port and drive to El Jadida via the city of Azemour, where we shall make a brief photo stop. As we arrive in El Jadida, which has been a registered UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2004, we shall begin with a visit to the city ramparts. Our guide will take us along the walls of the city, which overlook the harbour.
We continue our guided walk with a visit to the Medina of El Jadida, with shops selling jewellery, fruits and spices, before descending down to the highlight of the tour, the Portuguese Cistern.
Often used by film makers, including Orson Welles in his film ‘Othello’, the Cistern was built in 1514 and was first used for the storage of weapons. It has since been transformed into an underground water reservoir, with stone columns branching upwards to create beautiful archways, the reflections of which can be seen in the still water.
We then depart for our return to Casablanca, making a refreshment stop on the outskirts of El Jadida.
TOUR NOTES: This tour involves approximately 80 metres (260 feet) of compulsory walking, some of which will be over uneven ground, plus 45 steps to negotiate at El Jadida. Toilet facilities are available at our refreshment stop. For reference, the driving time to El Jadida takes approximately one hour and 15 minutes. This tour is not suitable for passengers with limited mobility or wheelchair users. Please note that this tour may operate in a different order to that described.
