NOUMEA, NEW CALEDONIA

The “land train” is an excellent option for those of us seeking a guided orientation tour of the city and resort area, complete with the best viewpoint of the peninsular.

We will board the land train from the passenger terminal and travel through the city centre to the Notre Dame de Pacifique lookout point – with a magnificent view of Noumea, the bays and nickel plant. We then continue towards the Military Barracks, which were built over 100 years ago, before turning towards Faubourg Blanchot – one of Noumea’s oldest residential districts with many old colonial homes. We will then continue towards the Promenade Pierre Vernier, the popular coconut lined waterfront and the island’s five star flagship hotel, the Meridien.

Continuing to the Ouen Toro lookout point we will enjoy a breathtaking view of the blue lagoon and the surrounding islands. Whilst we are enjoying the magnificent view, drinks and local pastries will be served to us.

Leaving here we will pass by Ansa Vata beach which is considered to be a paradise for water sports lovers. We must not forget to keep an eye out for the Baie the Citrons, one of the most popular beaches on the island. Continuing, we will pass the yacht club, the marina’s housing complex, Baie des Orphelinat and the Southern Province Government House.

We will also head towards Place des Cocotiers, the main shopping area where we can get off the train to do some shopping and make our own way back to our ship (approximately a ten minute walk) or remain on the train for the return journey to the ship.

TOUR NOTES: This tour involves very little walking, however four steps will be encountered in order to board the land train. It should be noted that local operators may also offer land train tours, but we have been advised that these are not reliable and will not include our featured stops or refreshments.
