White Villages of Andalucia
Mediterranean Excursions
CADIZ, SPAIN
On this tour we venture inland to a survivor of the Middle Ages and one of the most unspoilt villages of Spain, Medina Sidona.
It is as though time forgot this little village, with its cobblestone streets, red-tiled white buildings dotted along the hillside, Gothic church, Moorish gate and steep alleyways.
Continuing from this quaint village, we proceed to the old Arab town of Arcos de la Frontera. Built in the form of an amphitheatre, it is considered to be one of the prettiest white villages and is now a National Historic Monument. Perched atop a rock and embraced by the Guadalete River on three sides, Arcos de la Frontera boasts impressive white mansions and humble abodes.
Various architectural types can be seen, including Romanesque and Baroque displayed on façades and porticos of churches and chapels. Fine artistic coats of arms, Moorish arches and sculptures are exhibited on mansions and along the streets.
We shall stop for refreshments at the beautiful Parador Casa del Corregidor, a restored palace in the heart of the old quarter. Built in the 1700s, it was the palace and government seat of the King’s Magistrate in Arcos.
TOUR NOTES: This tour involves approximately one hour of walking at Medina Sidonia, and one hour at Arcos Frontera, which will be over cobbled ground and inclines, and there are many steps to negotiate, therefore it is not considered suitable for passengers with limited mobility or wheelchair users. Refreshments include one glass of wine or a soft drink per person. For reference, toilet facilities are available at Arcos Frontera.
