ROSEAU, DOMINICA
An amazing tour, providing us with a chance to see pilot, false killer, sperm and spotted whales, and bottle-nosed dolphins! After a walk of approximately 150 metres (500 feet), we board a 14 metre (45 feet), powered catamaran. We will be briefed on what we will be looking for, the species that inhabit these waters and their behaviour.
We then set off along the West Coast, three to 13 kilometres (two to eight miles) offshore, on our search for sightings. Every 15 minutes or so, the boat will be stopped and hydrophones lowered into the water to listen for the rhythmic clicking of sperm whales, the pinging of pilot whales, the whistling of dolphins and the singing of humpbacks. During this period, an educational commentary will be made.
TOUR NOTES: We cannot guarantee that you will always see whales and/or dolphins, as these creatures will be in their natural free environment. The minimum distance for approaching these animals is 50 metres (165 feet). Please note that there is no in-water activity as it is a calving area, and the creatures’ welfare is of primary concern. Refreshments will be served on the way back to port after this unforgettable experience. The boat is equipped with a toilet and a bar, although there is no PA system.
