CIVITAVECCHIA, ITALY

For those of us who would like to visit Rome but are worried about the amount of walking involved, this is the tour we should choose.

Please note that our call on the 1st of May will coincide with Italy’s Labour Day, some manifestations are expected in Rome, however the exact programme of events has not yet been confirmed. The order of sites visited on our tours may therefore be changed due to these celebrations. Please be advised that many of the shops will be closed and public transport is expected to be less frequent than usual. For those of us who would like to visit Rome but are worried about the amount of walking involved, this is the tour we should choose. We depart the quayside by coach with a local escort and arrive in Rome about two hours later, having made a refreshment stop en route (refreshments not included.)Our tour will first proceed following a classic itinerary, past the main historical sites of Lungoteveri, Castel Sant’ Angelo – once the mausoleum of the Emperor hadrian, later converted by the Popoes into a fortress connected by a pass to the Vatican – Villa Borghese Park, the elegant Via Veneto, Piazza Barberini with the Travei Fountain by Bernini, Piazza Esedra, and via Nazionale.Afterwards our tour continues to the archaeological sites. From Piazza Venezia – overlooked by the monument to Vittorio Emanuele II, more commonly known as the Altar of the Fatherland – we will travel along Via Fori Imperali, admiring on both sides the excavations of numerous monuments and basilicas and temples of ancient Rome, before arriving at the Colosseum, which we will be able to view briefly from the coach. We will see Circus maximum, the Caracalla baths, Arch of Constantine and the temples of Hercules and Portunus. There is no walking involved in this tour other than that at the restrooms. Please note that as this is a driving tour, it is not possible to see the Basilica of St Peter or the Trevi Fountain due to traffic regulations. The order in which sights are viewed may vary due to traffic. It is possible that due to the celebrations we may not be able to drive along Via Fori Imperali.
