This excursion takes us back more than 2,000 years in time, when we visit the world-famous Tikal National Park. We are transferred from our ship to the airport for an approximate hour’s charter flight to Flores, from where it’s approximately 1 hour’s drive to Tikal.Tikal is one of the largest and most impressive Mayan cities so far revealed and researched declared a Heritage of Mankind Site by UNESCO. Once this mighty city, rediscovered in the mid-19th century, was home to over 100,000 people. This incredible place includes the ‘Q’ Complex, the spectacular Great Plaza surrounded by the pyramids of the Giant Jaguar and the Masks, the Palace of the Nobles and Temple IV – one of the highest Mayan pyramids. From its top there is a complete view of Tikal and its magnificent surrounding jungle.Following a truly memorable day, we are transferred back to Flores for our return flight. Please note that this tour involves a substantial amount of strenuous walking (at least 5 kilometres/3 miles) over uneven ground and steps, therefore it is unsuitable for passengers with limited mobility. Sensible walking shoes are a must! Sun protection is also essential, and high humidity can be expected; insect repellent is recommended. Because we visit during the wet season, rainwear and/or a change of clothes might prove necessary. A packed lunch will be supplied, and a bottle of mineral water given to all participants. Please note that toilet facilities are very limited, and very basic.
