ST GEORGES, GRENADA
This delightfully ‘aromatic’ tour takes us to a fruit confectionery, a spice garden, a juice factory and a rum factory – a treat for our senses
This delightfully ‘aromatic’ tour takes us to a fruit confectionery, a spice garden, a juice factory and a rum factory – a treat for our senses! Just a short drive from St George’s lies De La Grenade Industries, a family-owned producer of jams and jellies made from guava and nutmeg, nutmeg syrup and De La Grenade Liqueur – also made from that heavenly-scented spice, nutmeg, following a 200-year-old secret recipe; they do a pretty mean rum punch as well! We are sure to purchase a gift basket to take the taste of the Caribbean back home. In a few minutes we’ll find ourselves engulfed in the aroma of every spice grown on the ‘Spice Isle’, as we arrive at the Laura Herb and Spice Garden. A wide selection of herbs and medicinal plants grow here, some of which are exported for use in patented medicines and in Caribbean and international cuisine. ‘Shado Bennie’ and ‘Jump Up and Kiss Me’ are local medicinal plants for which many uses are found. Spices include cocoa, nutmeg, mace, pimento, cinnamon, vanilla, turmeric and cloves. Now it’s on to the ‘baby’ of Grenada’s production sector – La Sagesse Farm, producers of local juices – for a chance to sample the exotic blends. Please wear comfortable shoes, as there is walking involved at each site, approximately: 5-10 metres (15-30 feet) plus 10 steps at De La Grenade Industries; 65 metres (215 feet) at Laura Herb and Spice Garden, over slightly uneven terrain covered with nutmeg shells; 5-10 metres (15-30 feet) plus 12 steps at La Sagesse Farm. This tour is not suitable for wheelchairs. No children under 18 years old may sample alcoholic beverages.
