KLAIPEDA, LITHUANIA
Departing from the pier, we shall have a 20 minute drive to the ferry for our trip across the lagoon to the Curonian Spit, which is also known as Neringa. The legend says that the giant Neringa gathered an apron full of sand and poured it into the sea forming a long stretch of land, which divided the sea from the lagoon and thus made the fishermen safer.
As we drive through this picturesque narrow stretch of land we shall pass the resort of Juodkrante with its Amber Bay, and see the Lutheran Church and beautiful old traditional houses as well as the diverse nature. After approximately one hours drive, we will stop in the main settlement of Nida. We shall have some free time here – to see the fishermen’s cottages, beautiful weather vanes and traditional flat boats (kurenas). It is possible to purchase souvenirs and refreshments (at our own expense). In the nearby Kazimieras Mizgiris Amber Gallery we will find out all there is to know about amber – its origins and places where it can be found – as well as the exhibits from the “Amber Treasure of Juodkrante”. There are impressive pieces of amber and beautiful jewellery. Continuing a short way by coach, we reach the 52 metre (170 feet) high Great Dune. A path will lead us to the top to get the best view of the magnificent panorama of the dunes – an excellent photo opportunity. We will also make a short stop by the Baltic Sea to take in the view of the long sandy beaches. We then return by coach, and ferry, to the ship.
This tour involves walking over uneven ground and sand, and is uphill to the dune viewpoint. Passengers with limited mobility or wheelchair users would need assistance, or may choose to remain on the coach. There is a 300 metre (985 feet) walk in the centre of Nida, 150 metre (492 feet) walk to the Great Dune and 50 metre (164 feet) walk to the beach. There are five steps to the top of the Great Dune (a ramp may be available). It should be noted that refreshments are not included.
