The Basque Coastline
Iberia Excursions
BILBAO, SPAIN
Discover everything the Basque coastline has to offer.
We begin our tour with a drive towards Gernika, where we will have the opportunity to admire the best of this historical and statutory capital – the Casa de Junta (House of Parliament for Vizcaya), with it’s symbolic oak tree, the Church of Santa María, the Park of Peace and the ‘fronton’ courts, where the Basque people practice their national game of Pelota Vasca.
Next we proceed towards the beautiful Basque Coast, which is picturesque and full of colour. We will travel through Mundaka, a pretty fishing village located in a nature reserve, to Bermeo, an important deep-sea fishing port on the Cantabrian Coast. Here we can enjoy some brief sightseeing.
Following the coast, where the blue of the sea contrasts with the green of the landscape, we reach Bakio for a visit to a local Txakoli cellar. Txakoli means ‘young wine’, and is important in the Basque country. We can enjoy some typical local appetisers here, before our return to Bilbao and our awaiting ship.
TOUR NOTES: This tour involves a total of approximately three hours of walking and standing, some of which will be over cobbled ground. There are some steps to negotiate during our stop in Gernika and 20 steps at the Txakoli cellar, therefore it is not recommended for passengers with limited mobility or wheelchair users. Please note that 15th to 24th August 2010 is Aste Nagusia in Bilbao – ‘fiesta week’ – therefore the city is likely to be very busy, and heavy traffic is likely.
