Leaving Papeete, we head towards the East Coast. Our first stop is at Tahara’s Viewpoint, where we can enjoy a magnificent view of the island of Moorea, and Matavai Bay with its black sand beach.Continuing to the Arahoho Blowhole, we will witness (conditions permitting) the ocean spurting dramatically out from underneath the coastal road. Next we shall visit the romantic Vaipahi Garden, where we can find trees like the Tahitian chestnut, tropical flowers such as birds of paradise and ginger, and plants including giant elephant ears and taro – a real pleasure for all our senses. Our next stop is at the Maraa Grotto, three natural caves carved by the sea. Some locals believe ‘varua ino’ (evil spirits) lurk in the shadowy depths. Others say that if you swim to the end of the grotto and follow the underground river, you will reach a wonderful valley in the spirit world. Before returning to the pier we shall visit the Marae Arahurahu, an open-air temple where Maohi gods were worshipped. Formed of basalt or coral stones, from the paved floors rose a sacred ‘ahu’ platform reserved for the gods and ancestral spirits.
A moderate amount of walking is involved, there will be a small amount at Tahara’s Viewpoint, including a couple of steps; 20 metres (65 feet), plus a couple of steps, to see the Arahoho Blowhole; around the Vaipahi Garden, on an unmade trail, which can be muddy; at the Maraa Grotto, over uneven ground and some steps, which can be slippery (take great care here); and a walk of at least 5 minutes to and from the Marae Arahurahu, over uneven ground. Passengers are advised to wear practical shoes and casual clothing. Bring insect repellent and sun protection. What flora seen cannot be guaranteed. Itinerary and order of stops may vary dependent upon weather and traffic conditions. It is recommended that all passengers bring a bottle of water with them for this tour.
