This fascinating rebuilt colonial house is dedicated to the famous American author, co-writer of the legendary bestseller Mutiny on the Bounty. It encloses an interesting library with thousands of books of American literature, antique furniture, family photos, paintings and other personal effects that belonged to the writer.At nearby Tahara’s Viewpoint we’ll enjoy a beautiful view of the island of Moorea and Matavai Bay, where the movie Mutiny on the Bounty was shot. A stop at Point Venus will allow us to see the only lighthouse on the island (external visit only), surrounded by aito trees (also known as iron trees). Point Venus was the landing site of European discoverers and evangelists, including Captain Cook. Here, in 1769, astronomer Charles Green – travelling on Cook’s Endeavour – observed the planet Venus passing in front of the sun.On the return journey to Papeete, we can discover the Tombeau du Roi – the grave of Tahiti’s last king, Pomare V.For reference, there is walking around James Norman Hall’s House, including a few steps; a small amount at Tahara’s Viewpoint, including a couple of steps; at Point Venus, over uneven sandy ground; and at the Tombeau du Roi, over uneven ground. Passengers should wear practical shoes and casual clothing. Bring insect repellent, bottled water and sun protection.
