This tour provides us with a rare opportunity to see spectacular scenery. Wadi Rum ranks alongside Petra as one of Jordan’s ‘Must see’ attractions. This area became famous in 1917-1918 during the Arab revolt led by the great enigma T.E. Lawrence. Desert scenes for the Lawrence of Arabia were also shot here.We shall travel across Jordan’s mountainous back-country to the valley of Wadi Rum. A few Bedouin families live here and the Desert Patrol keep an eye out for drug smugglers and lost tourists. Between the Government Rest House and the rock face of Jebel Rum are the ruins of the 1st century Nabatean Temple, but the main attraction is the desert itself. Following our jeep desert tour we shall return to our camp area in Wadi Rum where we shall have dinner under a Bedouin tent. How many people can say they have had dinner in the middle of the desert under clear skies and sparkling stars? There is a souvenir shop at the Rest House. To get the best deal, it is a good idea to bargain. Although the jeeps used are the best available vehicles at Wadi Rum, it is worth remembering that they are not deluxe, the roads are bumpy and the desert sand means it will also be dusty – but the views are worth it.
