Our coach leaves the pier for this tour of Rio; it will take us to the historic downtown centre and business district via Rio Branco Avenue. From a privileged viewpoint, we will see modern skyscrapers and broad avenues that contrast with colonial structures and narrow pedestrian malls of downtown. We shall view the Municipal Theatre and Rio Opera House, inaugurated in 1909 with a discreet elegance and rich in neo-classical inspiration; designed as a replica of the Paris Opera House, it is considered the most beautiful opera house in South America. We drive by the new Cathedral, travel along graceful Aterro Parkway to Flamenco Park, and pass the World War II Memorial and Museum of Modern Art. We then proceed to the Gloria, Catete and Botafogo residential areas before seeing the Jockey Club. We will pass in front of the beautiful Botanical Gardens, with over 5000 species of tropical plants, covering 350 acres. We are then taken by the famous beaches; Copacabana (south part), Ipanema and Leblon, the essence of the Carioca lifestyle. All of Rio seems to revolve around the beach, the pounding blue surf and sparkling white sand, lined by the distinctive mosaic sidewalks. Our return journey begins with refreshments at the Casa Nova Restaurant and a drive up through the Tijuca Forest, passing the Maracana Stadium before heading back to our ship. Please be aware this is primarily a coach tour and so therefore suitable for participants who wish to see the sites by coach rather than walking.
