LERWICK, SHETLAND ISLANDS
Our tour starts in the fishing port of Lerwick, founded back in the 17th century. The centre is full of character, especially by the water’s edge where the older buildings are situated. Moving through the town we will see the Town Hall and the Museum before turning west to the old town of Scalloway – the original main town, and second largest settlement on the island. En route we will stop at the Clickimin Broch – a good example of a broch tower with surrounding structures dating from the Iron Age.
Arriving in Scalloway, we will stop to discover the ancient Castle built around 1600 by Earl Patrick Stewart. This cruel and powerful man used forced labour from the surrounding area to build his residence, and was executed in Edinburgh, in 1615. There is also a local museum with a display devoted to the Shetland Bus - the boat which travelled between Shetland and Norway, helping the Norwegian Resistance movement during World War II. Our time here will be our own, with our guide on hand to answer any questions we may have.
Turning north, we will drive through Tingwall Calley, passing the Law Ting Holm – once the seat of the ‘Althing’ or ancient parliament. We shall then return to Lerwick, passing through Kergord – Shetland’s largest area of trees and home to the courageous Norwegian Shetland Bus Men, before arriving back at the port.
