Departing Cadiz, it is an approximate two-hour drive to Seville. Our route passes through the wonderful landscapes of Low Andalucia – large sherry vineyards, cotton, sugar beet and wheat fields. Seville provides the most universal picture of the spirit of Spain as a whole because of its wealth of art and architecture, attractive urban layout and graceful inhabitants. There are few cities with such special sights as La Giralda; the Almohad Tower with a Christian crown; El Alcazar; the Mudejar Palace full of medieval legends; and the Cathedral, which is the third largest in size in the Christian world. The city’s quarters are quaint, with narrow, winding streets and tiny squares. Seville also stands for the splendour of magnificent bullfights, with the beautiful Maestranza Bullring and its famous school of bullfighters. Plaza España is a grandiose structure built as Spain’s pavilion for the 1929 Hispanic-American Exhibition, part of the Maria Luisa Park; the impressive villas here today are the fair’s remaining pavilions, many of them now consulates or schools. This combination of colour, drama and charm has given Seville a marked personality and universal outlook, which has made it one of the most highly, praised cities in the world. This is mainly a walking tour, in which we visit Alcazar and Cathedral and Barrio de Santa Cruz (a honeycomb of narrow cobbled streets), after which we’ll have lunch at a local restaurant. We enjoy a panoramic city tour, passing the Plaza de America, Plaza España and Bullring, prior to returning to Cadiz and rejoining our ship. Please note that this is about 2¾ hours of walking involved in this tour, including steps, cobblestones and uneven surfaces.
