PONTA DELGADA, AZORES
Leaving Ponta Delgada by way of the coastal road, we pass through a number of picturesque villages before arriving at Feteiras. From here the route ascends towards Sete Cidades and the main crater of this extinct volcano, some 575 metres (1,900 feet) above sea level.
From the edge of this crater, 13 kilometres (eight miles) in circumference, there is a magnificent view of the two lakes at the bottom. One is blue, reflecting the sky, and the other is bright green due to the beautiful rich vegetation that surrounds it.
On our return journey we visit the António Borges Botanical Garden, which is one of the most beautiful gardens on the island. Located in the centre of Ponta Delgada City, this garden is famous for its remarkable collection of European and tropical trees. The visit here takes approximately 20 minutes and our coach will drop us at the north entrance and pick us up again at the south entrance.
Continuing to the suburb of Abelheira, another stop is made at a pineapple plantation, where the complete process of cultivation and marketing of this fruit is explained.
We return to Ponta Delgada.
TOUR NOTES: This tour involves some walking at Sete Cidades, in the botanical gardens, and at the pineapple plantation. Some of the walking will be over uneven ground and will include some steps. As we travel to quite a height, take along a jumper and/or raincoat.
