ORANJESTED, ARUBA
The Seaworld Explorer is a state-of-the-art semi-submarine developed in Australia for use on the Great Barrier Reef. The vessel does not submerge; instead we descend into the hull of this cruising underwater observatory and sit in air-conditioned comfort one and a half metres (five feet) below the surface, exploring the sea life through large, clear-glass windows.
Our journey will begin at the pier, where a bus will transport us to a second pier to board a transfer boat, which will take us out to the Seaworld Explorer. A knowledgeable narrator waiting onboard will point out beautiful coral formations and spectacular tropical fish in the amazing underwater world surrounding us.
On this tour we shall see the wreck of the Antilla – the largest wreck in the Caribbean – a 135 metre (440 feet) German freighter destroyed during World War II. The huge ship lies on her side in 18 metres (60 feet) of water, just under the surface of the ocean.
Once our tour has concluded, we will be transferred back to the shore, before being returned by bus to our awaiting ship.
TOUR NOTES: Please note that there are approximately 12 steps to negotiate in order to board and disembark the semi-submarine. The transfer between the launch and the semi-submarine takes place at sea. Participants should have a good degree of mobility. For reference, there are no toilet facilities. What marine life may be seen is obviously unpredictable, as is the clarity of the water at the time of our call. This tour is not recommended to passengers who suffer from claustrophobia. Our tour will conclude at a beach, so we may wish to bring along swimwear and a towel and stay for a while afterwards, but please note that the return taxi fare to our ship is not included in the tour price.
