The second largest city of the Netherlands, Rotterdam, is also the world’s biggest harbour. The city was built along the river Maas, 30 kilometres (17 ½ miles) from the North Sea. During the Second World War Rotterdam was almost completely destroyed, leaving only part of the city centre untouched. Nowadays Rotterdam is a city worth visiting for the modern architecture. The cube houses, ‘pencil tower’, Erasmus bridge and the Euromast are all signs of a modern city built for the future. Departing from the ship we will drive through the modern city centre, passing the cube houses on our way to the Spido pier. Here we join our modern cruise boat for a harbour tour lasting approximately 75 minutes. In amongst the traffic of both sea going and inland ships, this trip is a special voyage giving us an opportunity to see the activities in this busy harbour. The trip also focuses on the many special buildings that were constructed from the 19th to the 21st centuries – making Rotterdam an internationally renowned city of architecture. Following our harbour cruise, our city tour will continue as we make our way back to the ship by coach.
The harbour cruise boat is not for our exclusive use, so may well be shared with the general public. Toilet facilities are available onboard.
