CIVITAVECCHIA, ITALY

For those who wish to spend one day in Rome, this tour gives the opportunity to see are considered to be the major sights in this wonderful city.

Departing the quayside, we drive via the motorway directly to the centre of Rome. We then follow the classic itinerary through the main historical sights: the Roman Forum, the centre of the city’s political and religious life, the Arch of Constantine, one of the largest triumphal arches, and one of the most important monuments of ancient Rome, and a symbol of the eternity of Roman civilisation, the Colosseum.

Following our panoramic drive, a walking tour will take us to the well-known Fontana di Trevi (Trevi Fountain), the Piazza Colonna and the Pantheon, the best-preserved Roman monument.

One of the highlights of our tour is, without doubt, the Vatican City. The enormous Piazza San Pietro (St Peter’s Square) took Bernini ten years to build, and is considered to be one of the world’s most beautiful squares. Here stands San Pietro in Vaticano, better known as St Peter’s, the largest church in the world.

During the day, a typical Italian lunch will be served at a local restaurant.

TOUR NOTES: This tour involves a considerable amount of walking, some of which will be over rough and cobbled ground, and several steps will be encountered. Passengers are advised to wear comfortable shoes. Religious practice requires that shoulders and legs must be covered when entering St Peter’s Basilica. Though head covering is no longer compulsory, shorts, low neck line or bare shoulder dresses are not allowed inside the church. Please note that the itinerary may be adjusted according to traffic regulations and Papal Audiences. The use of Whispers (headsets) is compulsory during our visit to St Peter’s Basilica; no large bags are allowed inside the Basilica. There may be queues to enter, as every visitor must pass through metal detector controls. Please note that the Colosseum will be viewed from the coach; traffic regulations here do not allow vehicles to stop. For reference, the drive from the quayside to the centre of Rome takes approximately one and a half hours; a comfort stop will be made en route. The cost of this tour does NOT include the Vatican Gallery.
