DUBLIN, IRELAND

Our tour begins with a transfer to the River Liffey upon which Dublin was built. Here we shall board our boat for a gentle and relaxing cruise along the river, whilst listening to the Story of Dublin;

Bustling, cosmopolitan, ancient but young at heart, Dublin is one of Europe’s liveliest cities, where medieval and 17th century buildings stand comfortably amid all the trappings of a 21st century city. Our tour begins with a transfer to the River Liffey upon which Dublin was built. Here we shall board our boat for a gentle and relaxing cruise along the river, whilst listening to the Story of Dublin; from the first arrival of the Viking’s, 1,000 years ago, to the rapid development of the city during the 18th and 19th centuries. It subsequently declined during the 20th century and today the redevelopment of Dublin’s Docklands will amaze us. During our journey, we will be told the story about the iconic Ha’Penny bridge as well as Gandon’s masterpiece, the majestic Custom House. We will be able to follow the story of Dublin’s Royal and Grand canals and see where Oliver Cromwell landed in 1649. We shall also learn how much of present day Dublin now sits on reclaimed land, including Trinity College and the Spire in O’Connell Street. Following our river cruise, we shall rejoin our coach for a guided panoramic tour through the city. Our journey will take us past the Georgian Squares of Merrion and Fitzwilliam where we shall stop for a photo opportunity of the renowned Dublin doorways. We shall also make a photo stop at St Patrick’s Cathedral. Founded in 1190, St Patrick’s is perhaps best known for its association with Jonathon Swift, who was Dean here from 1713 to 1745. Continuing, we drive past the renowned Guinness Brewery, home of the well-known Black Stuff for which Dublin is famous, before passing Phoenix Park, Europe’s largest enclosed public park. Here we will see the homes of Ireland’s president and American Ambassador. Please note that there is a short walk from our coaches to board the boats and approximately 10 steps to negotiate. The boat will be covered however there will not be any toilet facilities onboard.
