Port Antonio was the home of the famous Hollywood filmstar, Errol Flynn. He once described the town as ‘a paradise unspoiled by human hands’. Leaving the pier, we pass through the historical town of Port Antonio and begin a short but scenic drive along the foot of the Blue Mountains. At ‘Rafters Village’, our two-seater bamboo raft awaits. Sitting in a basic hand-bound bamboo chair, we commence our journey down the beautiful Rio Grande.Rafting was used for generations as the simplest means of transporting men and crops. We will be poled down-stream by a skilled raftsman, who may impart some of his local knowledge about the native flora and fauna, and the history and people of the area. Positioned at the front of the raft, he will guide us through the river for approximately 2 ½ hours, using the current and the pole, pushing off the bottom. This relaxing cruise allows us plenty of time to take in the wonderful natural surroundings – reminiscent of an untouched paradise. We may enjoy a glimpse of rustic Jamaican life not seen from a roadside perspective. Our unforgettable river ride, a truly serene experience, comes to an end at ‘Rafters Rest’, where a cool, complimentary refreshment is served. At the start of the tour, there is a walk of approximately 100 metres (300 feet) to board the transport. It is worth bearing in mind that the rafts we will travel on are basic constructions. There are approximately 20 steps at the boarding place, plus some rough, uneven ground, and 8 steps at Rafters Rest. If you wish, you may swim from the raft (come already wearing your swimming costume under casual clothes, and do not forget a towel). Do not forget your sun protection! Insect repellent is recommended.
