Quirigua – a UNESCO Heritage of Mankind Site – was a small Mayan city, but it is notable because of its many extraordinary monuments; some of the best examples of stellae (slabs with inscriptions) are exhibited. On view are 12 stellae, four zoomorphs (enormous carved stones depicting mythological animals) and un-restored temples. The driving time to and from Quirigua is approximately two hours. This tour involves walking over uneven ground at Quirigua (where we shall spend around 2 hours), therefore it is not recommended for passengers with limited mobility. Wear comfortable shoes and sun protection; be prepared for high humidity. Insect repellent is suggested. Because we visit during the wet season, rainwear and/or a change of clothes might prove necessary. A bottle of mineral water will be provided to all participants.
