A successful port at the mouth of the Sarno River, the town was covered by approximately seven metres (23 feet) of ash and pumice following the eruption of Mount Vesuvius.
As our guide will explain, much of the ash and pumice has been removed over the last 200 years to reveal all aspects of daily life. Our tour of the excavations begins from Porta Marina, the gate to the forum, which was the economical and political centre of the town.
We proceed through the remains of some ancient shops and homes, before visiting Casa del Fauno, the Roman Baths and other sights of archaeological interest.
Following our visit to the ruins, we shall then have some free time to browse for souvenirs, before we re-board our tour coaches for the return journey to Naples.
TOUR NOTES: This tour involves approximately two hours of walking, most of which will be over uneven and cobbled ground. There will be a steep incline at the entrance to the ruins and there may be some steps to negotiate. It is not suitable for passengers with limited mobility or wheelchair users. Please be aware that in the event of rain, the site can be very slippery, so passengers should exercise caution.
